Obituary

Vivian N. Cannell, 96, of Mendon, Illinois, passed away at 2:37 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

She was born April 24, 1930, in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Chester W. and Hazel (Lewis) Anderson. She was raised in Ursa and graduated from Quincy Senior High School with the Class of 1948. Prior to her marriage, Vivian helped at her family's business, Anderson's Café in Ursa.

On September 15, 1951, she married Henry Rogers Cannell at the Ursa Christian Church. Together they shared more than 55 years of marriage before Henry preceded her in death on January 1, 2007. Vivian and Henry farmed near Mendon while raising their four children.

Vivian was a lifelong and highly active member of the Ursa Christian Church for more than 75 years. Throughout the years she served as Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, choir director, bell choir member, pianist, and worship leader. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, she frequently sang at church services and funerals and often accompanied worship and special services on the piano. Music was one of Vivian's greatest gifts, and whether singing or playing the piano, she brought comfort, joy, and inspiration to countless people throughout her life. She was also active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and the Add-A-Couple Sunday School Class.

She was a member of the Priscilla Alden Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the North Adams Historical Society.

Vivian will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, church, and community. An exceptional cook, she was especially known for her homemade noodles, a favorite at family gatherings. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary and took great joy in celebrating the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Family was the center of Vivian's life. She delighted in hosting holiday gatherings, decorating her home for every season, and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Henry created cherished memories through annual fishing trips to northern Minnesota. Vivian also enjoyed, caring for her flowers, traveling, and preserving the legacy of the Cannell Centennial Farm, recognized as an Illinois Historic Farm. She had a true green thumb and was known for her ability to bring even the most neglected or dying house plants back to life.

Survivors include two sons, Brent (Vicki) Cannell of Mendon and Bruce (Mary) Cannell of Quincy; one daughter, Susan (Merle) Kenady of Timewell; one daughter-in-law, Lois Cannell of Laramie, Wyoming; grandchildren, Daron (Jodi) Cannell, Brian (Selene) Kenady, Katie (Dave) Reilly, Nathan (Abby) Cannell, Jessica (Jimmy) Williamson, Tyler (Floriana) Cannell, Caroline (fiancé Eli Riesterer) Cannell, Catherine Cannell, and two step-grandsons Kenny and Cody Shannon; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous friends and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; her son, Curtis Cannell; her grandson, Daniel Cannell; and her brother, Milo Anderson.

Vivian's family was her greatest blessing, and her life was a shining example of faith, service, hard work, and unconditional love. Her legacy will live on through the generations she nurtured and inspired.
