George "Ed" Stevens

George Edward Stevens, “Ed”, 62 of La Prairie, Illinois passed away on Friday January 30th, 2026 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Ed was born on July 22nd, 1963 in Gary, Indiana to George Riley Stevens and S. Carlene (Schoonover) Stevens. His family moved to La Prairie in 1969 and resided there for the remainder of his life.

On July 4th, 1986, Ed married the love of his life, Frances “Fran” Stevens (Rossiter), at La Prairie Community Church. Together the shared a life centered on faith, family and community. He served on the village board as a trustee for many years.

He spent much of his working life alongside his parents at La Prairie Garage, where they operated the business for over 30 years until they closed in 2008. At which time he began working at Turner Bros. in Quincy, IL doing maintenance and repairs on railroad trucks and equipment continuing after the business became Nick’s Garage. He was know for his strong work ethic and mechanical skill. Ed was always willing to lend a hand where ever it was needed and to anyone who asked. He was never one to sit idle.

A devoted family man, Ed’s life truly revolved around his church and family. No one was a stranger very long. If asked how he was he always said “I’m Blessed. I have Jesus in my heart and I’m willing to share him” He never missed an opportunity to share his love for God and lived every day working to show that love to others and help others to get to know the Lord. He was a long time member of La Prairie Community Church, where he met Fran at an ice cream social in 1982. He was a homebody and preferred to be home working on his many projects. In recent years he enjoyed traveling with Fran and they made many cherished memories on their trips. They traveled to Florida, went snorkeling in the Gulf and Atlantic waters, drove out to the Keys and took the ferry to Dry Tortugas. They traveled out west along route 66 and to many of the country's National Parks. They rode horses at Grand Tetons and visited Yellowstone National Park. They visited Leadville, Colorado where his many time great grandfather, George Stevens, had a gold claim in the 1800s. They had many other wonderful adventures together the destination never mattered just the time they got to spend together. He loved his horses and enjoyed trail riding and driving. He took pride in building pony buggies which he drove in parades and gave buggy rides and pony rides at the church fall gathering every year. He enjoyed working on old tractors and taking something old and bringing it back to life. He enjoyed just spending time with his family watching movies and spoiling those he loved.

Ed is survived by his wife Frances “Fran” Stevens; his daughter, Holly (John) Sedore of Milton, Iowa; Cranston and Ashley Haney and their two sons Kenny and Nicolas Haney of Clayton, IL who he loved as his own, along with many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, George Rolland Stevens.

Visitation for Ed will be held on Thursday evening, February 5, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Triplett Funeral Home in Golden, Illinois.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Knoxville City Cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois with Rev. Tom Spain officiating.
